The State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Rivers State, Mr George Mfongang, has expressed concern over the increasing rate of young Nigerian graduates migrating abroad in search of better opportunities.
During a meeting with the Rivers State Commander of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Mrs Nwamaka Ikediashi, in Port Harcourt, Mfongang emphasized the importance of cautioning young Nigerians about the dangers of illegal migration.
Mfongang highlighted Nigeria’s potential and urged citizens, especially young graduates, to be patriotic, disciplined, honest, and selfless in their endeavors to contribute to the country’s development. He acknowledged the need for collaborative efforts among leaders, stakeholders, and organizations to address the challenges associated with illegal migration and protect the welfare of young Nigerians.
In response to NAPTIP’s proposal to sensitize corps members on the risks of illegal migration, Mfongang recommended that the request be forwarded to NYSC Headquarters through NAPTIP Headquarters. He emphasized the potential benefits of incorporating NAPTIP’s awareness program into the national orientation timetable to educate and empower corps members across the country.
Mrs Nwamaka Ikediashi echoed the importance of educating young graduates about the dangers of illegal migration, citing instances where individuals were misled by fraudulent agencies promising lucrative opportunities abroad, only to find themselves in exploitative situations such as prostitution, drug trafficking, forced labor, and organ harvesting.
