Bauchi, Nigeria— The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has emphasized the critical role of corps employers in enhancing service delivery through proactive support for corps members’ welfare.
This appeal was made by Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, Director General of NYSC, during the 2025 NYSC/Corps Employers’ Workshop held in Bauchi. The DG, represented by Agatha Banki, Director of the Northeast Area Office 1, called on employers to either pick up corps members directly from orientation camps or refund their transportation costs to ease their transition into the workplace.
He further urged employers to provide comfortable accommodation or compensate corps members accordingly, stating that such gestures significantly improve their motivation and performance.
Highlighting the collaborative nature of the workshop, Nafiu noted that the annual event serves as a strategic platform for dialogue, innovation, and problem-solving between the NYSC and corps employers.
“These engagements consistently generate actionable recommendations that strengthen the operations of the Scheme,” he said. “I believe this year’s workshop will be equally impactful.”
Brigadier General Nafiu also reminded employers of their responsibilities, which include providing transportation allowances, healthcare access, and a conducive work environment—similar to what is offered to regular staff.
He encouraged participants to explore sustainable ways to build a proactive partnership and improve communication channels that would ultimately boost the effectiveness of corps member administration.
Earlier, Bauchi State NYSC Coordinator, Umoren Kufre, reaffirmed the Scheme’s commitment to collaboration, stating that partnerships with employers are key to unlocking the full potential of the NYSC.
“Empowerment, innovation, and social responsibility thrive when we work together,” he said. “This workshop is a platform to exchange insights, share best practices, and collectively strengthen the NYSC’s impact on both corps members and the national workforce.”
The event concluded with a shared commitment to fostering deeper cooperation between NYSC and corps employers to ensure improved mutual benefit and national development.
