Paiko, Niger State — The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General O.O. Nafiu, has encouraged corps members in Niger State to wholeheartedly embrace the principles of national unity, cultural diversity, and self-empowerment as central to the NYSC’s vision.
During his visit to the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Paiko, Brigadier General Nafiu reiterated the NYSC’s role as a platform for fostering unity among Nigerians. He described the scheme as a divinely inspired initiative that remains relevant in promoting cross-cultural understanding and national development.
Highlighting the value of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, the DG urged corps members to take advantage of it as a pathway to financial independence and sustainable livelihoods. He emphasized that vocational training is not merely an addition to the camp routine but a significant tool for nation-building and personal growth.
“SAED is your gateway to a productive future,” he said. “It empowers you to become creators of opportunities, not seekers.”
He further advised corps members to honor their one-year service commitment, despite potential foreign distractions, noting that the NYSC certificate is a nationally recognized symbol of integrity and civic duty.
“Every posting is an opportunity to make a difference,” Nafiu said, urging corps members to contribute meaningfully to host communities and to view their assignments as acts of service to Nigeria.
Speaking on the role of digital engagement, Brigadier General Nafiu encouraged corps members to use social media responsibly, projecting the NYSC positively rather than chasing popularity.
He reassured them of the scheme’s unwavering commitment to their security and welfare, adding that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is equally committed to safeguarding corps members across Nigeria.
In her briefing, Mrs. Abdulwahab Olayinka, NYSC Niger State Coordinator, presented a progress report of the ongoing orientation exercise. She noted several challenges, including inadequate sanitary facilities, limited bedding supplies, aging ambulance vehicles, and lack of proper drainage systems. She mentioned that these issues are being addressed through continuous engagement with the state government.
According to her, there are plans underway for the construction of a new orientation camp, driven by the support of the state governor.
In closing, Brigadier General Nafiu congratulated the corps members on their academic accomplishments and reminded them of their vital role in national transformation. He reaffirmed the NYSC’s dedication to working collaboratively with government institutions and development partners to strengthen the impact of the scheme.
