Anambra state, Nigeria –The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has strongly condemned the reported assault of a corps member, Edema Elohor Jennifer (AN/24C/0626), in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
In an official statement released on Tuesday and signed by the scheme’s management, the NYSC described the incident as “unacceptable,” while reaffirming its unwavering commitment to the welfare and security of corps members across the country.
“Management wishes to restate its strong commitment to the welfare and security of corps members nationwide and would not condone any individual or group undermining their safety for whatsoever reason,” the statement read.
The NYSC expressed deep concern over the alleged incident and stressed that all those responsible must be held accountable. It also called on host communities and security agencies to intensify efforts in ensuring a safe environment for corps members serving in their jurisdictions.
“Members of the public are enjoined to provide adequate security for corps members in their places of primary assignment and host communities,” the agency added.
Preliminary investigations, according to the NYSC, revealed that operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group had forcefully entered a corps lodge in Oba, claiming it was being used for illicit activities — an allegation the scheme noted remains unverified.
During the operation, corps member Jennifer, who was reportedly only visiting the premises, was physically assaulted by the vigilante operatives. The incident has since been reported to the police, and an investigation is underway to ensure justice is served.
The NYSC reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on any form of harassment, intimidation, or abuse directed at corps members. It appealed to members of the public and host communities to treat corps members with respect and to support their safety and well-being during their period of national service.
