Nigeria – The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has addressed concerns regarding the delayed payment of the newly approved ₦77,000 monthly allowance for corps members, stating that the delay was not intentional.
This clarification comes after corps members received only ₦33,000 as their February allowance, contrary to the ₦77,000 promised by the federal government.
Speaking on the matter, NYSC’s acting spokesperson, Mrs. Carol Lembu, revealed in a WhatsApp conversation with SaharaReporters that the scheme was still awaiting the necessary cash backing from the government.
“We are still awaiting the cash backing,” Lembu said, reassuring corps members that the full allowance would be disbursed once the funds are available.
However, the delay has sparked reactions from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). On Sunday, NANS National Vice President for Inter-Campus Affairs, Felicia Akinbodunse, called for a probe into NYSC’s failure to implement the new allowance, questioning why corps members were yet to receive the full amount despite assurances.
According to Akinbodunse, findings from her office showed that while civil servants at both state and federal levels had begun receiving the newly approved ₦70,000 minimum wage, corps members were left in uncertainty. She emphasized that there was no justification for the delay and urged the NYSC to provide a clear timeline for payment.
Corps members across the country have expressed frustration over the situation, hoping for a swift resolution and full implementation of the new allowance to ease their financial burden.
