Not fewer than 100,000 houses and building built in 40 years – FHA

The Federal Housing Authority says it has built more than 100,000 homes across the country, Since its establishment in 1973,.

Senator Gbenga Ashafa, the managing director of the Authority, made this announcement in Abuja during a press conference prior to the organisation’s 50th anniversary celebration.

He noted that one of the organisation’s noteworthy accomplishments is the digitisation of operations, which is currently 95% complete.

He said his administration through various programmes had boosted the morale of personnel for effective service delivery.

The Managing Director stated that in order to solve the housing need in the country, the Authority would require more than four billion naira, and the adoption of the Rent to Own Model delivery would give Nigerians of all income brackets the opportunity to own a home.

” Within the past 3 years, we have been able to clear the backlog of promotions, proved on staff welfare by providing the needed work tools and conducive environment. We have succeeded in restoring the staff morale, and taking back housing authority to where it should belong”, he said.

Senator Ashafa decried that the act establishing the Authority was obsolete, as no provision were made for collecting Service charges and removal of the authority from the nation’s budget hindered it from effectively maintaining its houses nationwide.

According to him the Federal Housing Authority had commenced the construction of the Golden Jubilee Estate in Mbora community of the FCT which will be replicated in each of the nations geo-political zones.

In addition, Senator Ashafa added that the authority has begun building 340 homes in the Bwari estate’s first phase, which is a replication of the Rent to Own Delivery Model that was originally implemented with the creation of the Zuba Estate.
