Nurses, Midwives Demand Better Pay, Policies

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has called for improved remuneration, enhanced working conditions, and supportive policies to empower nurses and midwives across the country.

Speaking at the association’s National Executive Council meeting in Abuja, NANNM President Haruna Mamman highlighted the critical role nurses and midwives play in saving lives, emphasizing the need for their voices to be represented in healthcare policy-making. He pledged to collaborate with the government, educational institutions, and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) to ensure that training programs align with global standards, strengthening the nation’s healthcare workforce.

“We must address remuneration, job security, and workplace safety while building a support system that enables our members to thrive both professionally and personally. Achieving this requires collaboration and leveraging our diverse strengths,” Mamman stated.

Delta State Chairman of the association, Philomena Onokpuvie, echoed these sentiments, citing the numerous challenges faced by nurses, including low wages and inadequate working conditions. She urged the federal government to urgently review salary structures and approve improved remuneration packages.

“Our major concern is welfare. For instance, in Delta State, delays in implementing the 25% CONHESS salary adjustment have caused significant frustration. Nurses are doing so much with very little, and it’s taking a toll on us,” Onokpuvie lamented.

The meeting marked the first gathering of NANNM executives since the election of Mr. Mamman, an indigene of Katsina State, who defeated the immediate past president, Michael Nnachi, by 99 votes to 74. The association reiterated its commitment to fostering a supportive environment that enhances the professional and personal growth of its members.
