NUJ FCT Champions Press Freedom and Improved Working Conditions

Abuja, NigeriaIn observance of the 2025 Press Week, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council organized a peaceful march on Monday to advocate for press freedom, human rights, and better working environments for journalists.

The event, dubbed “Walk for Press Freedom,” saw over 200 participants carrying placards with slogans such as “Without a free press, truth is silenced,” “Press freedom protects our right to know,” and “Journalists speak for the voiceless—support their freedom.”

Comrade Grace Ike, Chairperson of the NUJ FCT Council, described the march as a powerful affirmation that press freedom is essential and non-negotiable—a cornerstone of any thriving democracy.

“Today, we stand united as journalists committed to upholding truth and defending democratic values. This demonstration reaffirms the media’s vital role in Nigeria,” Ike stated.

She emphasized that without an independent press, society risks losing voices and access to truth, which undermines governance and accountability. This year’s theme, “Press Freedom, Democracy, Media and the Society,” reflects the critical connection between journalism and societal progress.

Noting growing economic difficulties and increasing threats faced by journalists—including censorship, harassment, and violence—Ike called on media practitioners to remain resilient.

Mrs. Evelyn Onyilo, Chairperson of the Planning Committee, highlighted the indispensability of a free press for genuine democracy.

“True democratic governance cannot flourish without a free media. Press freedom must be respected by those in power, who should see journalists as partners rather than adversaries,” Onyilo said.

NUJ FCT Vice Chairman Ndambabo Yahaya added that the march was intended to spotlight the urgent need to safeguard press freedom in Nigeria.

“We call on the government and all stakeholders to collaborate in protecting the rights of the press,” Yahaya urged.
