NUJ Expresses Concern Over Nigeria’s Economic Hardship

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has expressed serious concerns about the worsening economic conditions faced by Nigerians. This was stated in a communique issued after the council’s recent Congress in Abuja.

The NUJ strongly criticized the recent hike in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), noting that the increase has placed a severe burden on household budgets. The rise in fuel prices has led to a spike in the cost of essential goods, making them unaffordable for many Nigerians, the communique emphasized.

The Congress also raised alarm over the sharp rise in tuition fees across educational institutions, which has forced many parents to withdraw their children from school in search of more affordable alternatives. The union warned that if immediate action is not taken, the country could see a further rise in the number of out-of-school children.

On the issue of security, the NUJ called on law enforcement agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police, to take decisive steps to curb the growing insecurity in the FCT, especially the increase in ‘one-chance’ criminal activities.

The Congress also expressed concern over the recurring issue of flooding in some parts of the Federal Capital Territory, which has resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of property worth billions of naira, and the displacement of numerous residents. The NUJ urged the government to provide immediate relief for flood victims and to implement long-term measures to prevent future occurrences.

In conclusion, the union called on the government to take urgent and sustainable steps to address the current economic challenges and alleviate the hardship being faced by Nigerians.
