The Zamfara State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned the brutal murder of seasoned journalist, Hamisu Danjibga, allegedly by unknown assailants.
In a statement in Gusua, on Wednesday, the Union’s Secretary, Ibrahim Ahmad Gada, expressed the NUJ’s deep sorrow and shock at the tragic death of Danjibga, whom he described as a dedicated reporter with Voice of Nigeria (VON).
His lifeless body was discovered in a soakaway located behind his residence, three days after he went missing.
The revelation of Danjibga’s remains followed the disturbing stench emanating from the tank, which was noticed by students of a school situated directly adjacent to Danjibga’s home on the evening of September 20, 2023.
These students alerted their teachers, leading to an investigation of the source of the odour.
Ibrahim explained that upon the removal of the cover of the soakaway’s by residents, a body was discovered, which was subsequently confirmed by both the family and the local community to be that of Danjibga.
The NUJ expressed condolences to the grieving family, the Voice of Nigeria, and the journalism community.
Ibrahim further stated that the Council, while deeply troubled by the circumstances surrounding Danjibga’s tragic demise, urgently appealed to the security agencies to conduct a thorough and expeditious investigation into the matter.
The NUJ called for swift justice to be served and for the perpetrators to be brought to account.
Two suspects arrested
Danjinga was reported missing last Saturday, and many believed that he was kidnapped by bandits.
Later, a text message was said to have been sent by an unidentified number demanding the sum of N1 million in ransom from his family.
Two suspects close to the late Danjinga’s family were apprehended by the security agents in relation to his brutal murder.
A funeral prayer for the late Danjinga was performed near his house with hundreds of sympathisers in attendance.
He was survived by a wife, many children, and grandchildren.
