The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has issued a strong warning, stating that they will shut down the power sector if the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, is arrested.
The Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Nigerian Police Force invited Ajaero for questioning on charges including Criminal Conspiracy, Terrorism Financing, Treasonable Felony, Subversion, and Cybercrime.
In response, the Acting General Secretary of NUEE, Igwebike Dominic, condemned the actions of the government and described the situation as politically motivated. The union expressed disappointment in the government’s alleged witch-hunting, harassment, and intimidation tactics instead of addressing the unlawful invasion of the NLC National headquarters.
NUEE criticized the government’s attempt to stifle labor and free speech and urged elected leaders to consider the well-being of the country.
NUEE emphasized that the government’s actions were a blatant abuse of the Constitution of Nigeria and international labor conventions. The union vowed to resist such interference and harassment of labor leaders. If Ajaero is arrested, NUEE stated that they would support NLC directives and mobilize their members in the power sector to withdraw their services.
The union called on the Federal Government to proceed with caution, noting the existing public discontent due to hunger and inflation in the country.
NUEE emphasized the importance of respecting and guaranteeing the rights of citizens for the country to progress.
