The National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC) has launched a training program for an Inter-Agency Committee to monitor and evaluate the Federal Executive Council’s approvals on outstanding death benefits, allowances, and insurance for the Nigeria Police Force.
At the training program in Abuja on Thursday, NSIWC Chairman Ekpo Nta emphasized the need for improved service conditions and prompt payment of death benefits to enable police officers to effectively combat crime and protect lives and property.
“As a result of the #EndSARS protests in October 2020, former President Muhammadu Buhari directed the NSIWC to expedite the review of the Nigeria Police Force’s remunerations,” Nta noted.
He explained that the NSIWC conducted extensive nationwide studies on police remunerations and service conditions through interactions with stakeholders, including police leadership, the Ministry of Police Affairs, the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, the Budget Office of the Federation, and the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President.
The Federal Executive Council, in its December 15, 2021 meeting, approved several measures effective January 1, 2022. These include increased rent subsidies, revised shift duty and supervision allowances, new peculiar allowances, and tax waivers for junior police personnel similar to those enjoyed by the military. Additionally, priority payments of annual insurance premiums for Group Personal Accident Insurance and Property Insurance were approved to ensure immediate benefits to beneficiaries and cover repairs or replacements of damaged police infrastructure.
Nta stated that the NSIWC will establish a system for routine observation of police salaries and benefits through electronic and physical platforms, in accordance with current laws and service agreements.
Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, in a message to the event, expressed that these measures would motivate officers to be more proactive in their duties.
The event’s theme was “Monitoring the Implementation of Approved Allowances and Offsetting Outstanding Pension Arrears, Death Benefits, and Other Related Matters.”
