NSCDC Shuts Down Illegal Mining Site in Osun State

Osogbo, Osun State  —  The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Osun State Command, has dismantled an illegal mining site in the Sambisa area of Kajola, Atakumosa West Local Government Area.

The operation, led by State Commandant Igbalawole Sotiyo, was carried out following extensive intelligence gathering and surveillance, according to a statement by NSCDC spokesperson, ASC Kehinde Adeleke.

Commandant Sotiyo emphasized that the action is part of the command’s continuous efforts to combat illegal mining activities in the state. He revealed that those apprehended at the site confessed to operating without proper licenses, violating national mining regulations.

“Protecting Nigeria’s solid mineral resources remains a core responsibility of the NSCDC, and we will intensify our crackdown on unlawful mining operations across Osun State,” Sotiyo stated.

Seized Equipment and Fleeing Suspects

During the raid, security personnel confiscated and destroyed various mining tools, including draglines and pumping machines. While one suspect was taken into custody, others fled the scene, abandoning their equipment. Commandant Sotiyo vowed that efforts are underway to apprehend and prosecute the escapees.

The NSCDC urged residents to report illegal mining activities in their communities, stressing the importance of safeguarding the environment and protecting the nation’s economic resources.
