A commandant serving with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Christopher Oluchukwu, has been sentenced to five years in prison for his involvement in an employment scam. The verdict was delivered by the Katsina State High Court 3, following a case brought forth by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
Oluchukwu was accused of defrauding three individuals by promising to secure jobs for their children within the NSCDC in exchange for sums totaling N900,000. Despite receiving the money, he failed to deliver on his promise and refused to refund the victims.
ICPC spokesperson, Demola Bakare, stated that the victims reported the matter after their attempts to secure the promised jobs proved futile. During the trial, ICPC’s counsel, Ibrahim Garba, presented a nine-count charge detailing how Oluchukwu’s actions violated Sections 8, 10, and 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000.
One of the counts read, “That you Christopher Oluchukwu Ugwubujo on or about 25th and 28th day of November, 2014 within the jurisdiction of this Court while being a public officer with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) conferred corrupt advantage upon yourself by obtaining a total sum of four hundred thousand naira (N400, 000. 00) from one…for a job placement for her daughter into NSCDC and you thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000.”
In his ruling, Justice Abbas Bawale found Oluchukwu guilty on all nine counts and sentenced him to five years imprisonment without the option of a fine. The judge ordered that the sentences run concurrently and instructed authorities to apprehend Oluchukwu’s surety for further investigation, as the defendant had jumped bail.
