NSC Urges Sports Federations to Align with National Vision

Abuja, NigeriaThe National Sports Commission (NSC) has called on the leadership of Nigeria’s sports federations to foster greater collaboration and unity of purpose in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda for the development of the sports sector.

Speaking during a joint executive session with the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko emphasized the importance of synergy between the Commission and the federations. The meeting took place at the ANOCA (Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa) Secretariat in Abuja.

Dikko described the federations as the key grassroots drivers of national sports development and urged them to align with the broader national goal of creating a vibrant, sustainable sports economy.

“As Chairman, alongside my Director General, we’ve come together with NOC leadership and national federations to address pressing challenges in Nigerian sports,” he stated. “These federations are the boots on the ground. If we are to realize the President’s vision, we must synchronize our goals.”

The meeting focused on strengthening inter-agency cooperation and tackling sector-wide concerns through shared insights and planning.

President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Habu Gummel, described the engagement as productive and inclusive, adding that the dialogue allowed for critical questions and transparent discussions between stakeholders.

“The essence of this joint meeting was to bring everyone to the table—federations, the NSC, and the NOC—to exchange views and chart a common path forward,” Gummel explained. “I am glad the session offered room for clarity, open feedback, and actionable next steps.”

Following the session, over 30 presidents of sports federations participated in an inspection tour of the under-construction NOC Secretariat, which is projected to be completed within the next two years.
