NPFL Sanctions Shooting Stars with N5m Fine, Stadium Closure

Ibadan, Nigeria  —  The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has handed a N5 million fine to Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) following a series of crowd-related offenses during their Matchday 32 fixture against Ikorodu City.

According to a statement issued after the League’s disciplinary panel met on Wednesday, Shooting Stars were found culpable on multiple counts, including poor crowd control, inadequate security, and unsporting behavior from their fans that resulted in physical assault and damage to property.

Of the total fine, N3 million is to be paid to the League, while N2 million is to be paid to Ikorodu City FC for damages to their team bus sustained during the post-match violence at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.

The charges against 3SC include:

– Failure to provide adequate and effective security, which enabled unauthorized access to restricted areas and led to the harassment of match officials, incurring a N1 million fine.

– Negligence in controlling supporters, resulting in assault on visiting team members and supporters which is attracting another N1 million sanction.

– Disorderly conduct from fans, including the throwing of objects onto the pitch and at match officials, leading to a third fine of N1 million.

In addition to the monetary penalties, the NPFL has ordered the indefinite closure of the Lekan Salami Stadium to spectators for the remainder of the season.

Under Rule C26 of the NPFL Framework, Shooting Stars have 48 hours to either accept the decision or submit an appeal.
