NPF Clarifies IGP’s Four-Year Tenure as Compliant with Existing Laws

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has clarified that the four-year tenure of an Inspector-General of Police (IGP) is consistent with existing legal provisions and is not a recent development.

Responding to reports regarding the tenure of the current IGP, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that the IGP’s tenure aligns with established legal frameworks. He emphasized that the IGP does not need to lobby for an extension, as his appointment has been formally confirmed with a letter granting him a full four-year term.

In the statement, Adejobi noted, “The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to misleading reports and misinterpretations concerning the tenure of the IGP, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun. It is important to categorically state that the approval given by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is not an extension of tenure but the proper application of the law governing the IGP’s office.”

Adejobi further explained that an official letter issued to the IGP, following his confirmation by the Police Council, outlined the terms of his tenure. “The letter, dated November 3, 2023, clearly states that the President approved a four-year tenure for the IGP in accordance with Section 215(a) and Section 28(c) of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended,” the statement read.

He also addressed the circulation of misinformation, stating, “The IGP does not require any lobbying for a tenure extension, as his appointment letter explicitly grants a four-year term from the date of his appointment. The spread of false information is the work of pessimists and mischief-makers seeking to undermine the office and the IGP for their own gain.”

Adejobi concluded by noting that the IGP has received an additional letter, in line with the Police Act, 2020 (as amended), which supersedes earlier communications, and urged the public to disregard unfounded speculations.
