NPC Registers Over 10 Million Children Nationwide

The National Population Commission (NPC) has successfully registered and issued birth certificates to over 10 million children across Nigeria.

Chairman of the Commission, Alhaji Nasir Isa Kwara, disclosed this during a press briefing following the presentation of a birth certificate to the “Baby of the Year” by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu at Asokoro General Hospital, Abuja. The Chairman was represented by Bala Banya, the Federal Commissioner for Katsina State.

Banya emphasized the Commission’s dedication to ensuring every child born in the country is registered and issued a birth certificate, regardless of their place of birth. He also highlighted the digitization of the registration system and ongoing collaboration with the Primary Health Care Agency to enhance efficiency.

“Parents and guardians are encouraged to take advantage of this free service to ensure their children are documented,” Banya urged.

Director-General of the NPC, Dr. Telson Osifo Ojogun, announced plans to establish over 4,000 registration centers nationwide, making the process more accessible to families. He added that the Commission is leveraging advanced technology to provide every registered child with a unique, non-duplicable identity.

Dr. Ojogun commended First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, represented by the wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shetima, for her symbolic role in presenting the birth certificate to the Baby of the Year.

He also appealed to Nigerians to register deaths with the Commission, stressing the importance of accurate population data for national planning and development.
