Abuja, Nigeria — The National Population Commission (NPC) has made an urgent appeal for increased funding to bolster its operations and ensure the successful conduct of Nigeria’s forthcoming population and housing census.
Budget Presentation at National Assembly
Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, the NPC chairman, led the commission’s delegation to the House of Representatives Committee on National Identity and Population at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja to present the 2024 budget performance and defend the proposed 2025 budget.
Accompanied by federal commissioners, the director-general, and senior directors, Hon. Kwarra emphasized the commission’s critical financial requirements, particularly for the upcoming census. He stressed the pivotal role of the census in national planning and development, describing it as a tool for informed decision-making and economic progress.
Census-Specific Budget Awaiting Approval
During the session, Hon. Kwarra revealed that a separate budget specifically for the census would be submitted to the National Assembly after receiving presidential approval. He expressed confidence in the collaborative efforts between the commission and lawmakers to secure the needed resources.
The chairman of the House Committee, Hon. Okunjimi Odimayo, commended the NPC’s efforts and reiterated the importance of prudently managing allocated funds. He assured the commission of the committee’s unwavering support in achieving its mandate, particularly in conducting a credible and successful census.
The meeting highlighted the necessity of close cooperation between the NPC and lawmakers to address funding gaps, streamline operations, and achieve the census goals.
As Nigeria prepares for its next population count, the NPC remains committed to delivering accurate data to inform policy decisions and national development.
