Northern Groups Urge FG to Strengthen EFCC and Other Institutions

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has called on the federal government to reinforce the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other institutions to ensure they can effectively carry out their statutory duties.

The coalition has observed with great concern the efforts of certain individuals on social media who are attempting to recruit young Nigerians for a planned protest against the EFCC, under the guise of human rights activism.

In a statement issued by the national coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the CNG condemned and rejected any attempts to undermine or dismantle the EFCC.

“We will not remain passive while notorious ‘Yahoo boys’ and fraudulent cryptocurrency dealers disguise themselves as activists to undermine a crucial anti-corruption agency like the EFCC and threaten national peace and stability,” warned the group.

The CNG asserted that those involved in financial crimes and corruption are behind the planned protest, aiming to discredit and dismantle the EFCC. They emphasized that this protest signifies corruption fighting back, and urged all well-meaning Nigerians to resist these efforts.

The EFCC, according to the CNG, has been a beacon of hope in the fight against corruption, with significant achievements. They called on the federal government to strengthen the EFCC to enable it to prosecute high-profile cases and recover billions in looted funds.

Given the increasing financial crimes and corruption in Nigeria, the group stressed the need for a robust anti-graft body like the EFCC. They highlighted the commission’s critical role in holding corrupt officials accountable.

“Finally, we urge all patriotic citizens and stakeholders to support the EFCC’s independence from executive interference and advocate for dedicated funding to enhance its anti-corruption efforts. We also call on the commission to perform its duties with patriotism and professionalism, free from political, ethnic, or religious biases. The EFCC’s independence is essential to ensure it remains a formidable force against corruption,” the group concluded.
