Nollywood Star Monalisa Stephen Passes Away at Age 33

Lagos, NigeriaThe Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of popular Nollywood actress, body positivity advocate, and brand influencer, Monalisa Ayobami Stephen.

 

The 33-year-old actress passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, in Lagos, due to complications arising from low blood sugar and internal bleeding, according to a close family source.

The news of her passing was confirmed on Wednesday by entertainment executive and CEO of Best of Nollywood, Mr. Seun Oloketuyi, through a tribute on his Instagram page. He described Monalisa as a “hardworking and beautiful soul” whose impact extended beyond the screen.

“Brand influencer Monalisa Ayobami Stephen is dead. She died yesterday in Lagos after losing the fight against low sugar and internal bleeding. Her immediate younger sister confirmed the death of this hardworking and beautiful soul,” Oloketuyi wrote.

Monalisa Stephen was widely recognized for her fierce advocacy for plus-size women and her candid conversations surrounding mental health and self-worth. She frequently used her platform to champion self-love and challenge societal beauty norms.

In April 2023, she sparked widespread conversation with a revealing interview discussing aspects of her personal life—one of many instances that highlighted her fearless nature and commitment to honesty.

Although the family has yet to issue an official statement at the time of this report, tributes from fans, colleagues, and admirers continue to pour in across social media, celebrating her life, legacy, and unwavering message of body confidence and authenticity.
