No Nigerian Should Be Poor, Says Obasanjo: “Nigeria Is Rich”

NIGERIAFormer President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that Nigerians have no reason to live in poverty, given the abundant natural and human resources available in the country. Speaking at a dinner hosted in his honour by the Abia State Government in Umuahia, Obasanjo stated that the problem lies in the mismanagement of resources, not scarcity. “Nigerians have no business with poverty because God has given us all that we need,” he said. “If we are mismanaging what God has given us, we do not have God to blame, we have ourselves to blame.”

Obasanjo also praised Governor Alex Otti for his reform efforts in Abia, noting that if Nigeria had at least 18 governors working effectively, the country would witness significant progress. He emphasized that personal differences do not matter to him when it comes to matters of national development, asserting that his priority remains the welfare of Nigerians and the quality of leadership provided to them. “For me, whether you don’t greet me or I greet you and you don’t answer, what is important to me is that the people of this country are getting what they deserve and what they deserve is good governance,” he stated.

In his response, Governor Otti expressed gratitude to Obasanjo for his support, revealing that his administration is pursuing widespread educational reforms to improve access and quality. Reflecting on his political journey, Otti noted that it took nearly a decade to actualize his leadership vision, despite previous electoral setbacks. “A lot of people had given up hope and said it wasn’t going to work, but I was sure that I heard clearly from God,” he added.
