Kogi State, Nigeria — The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and its partners have officially launched the construction of five mini-Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State.
The groundbreaking ceremony marked the commencement of work on NNPC Prime LNG, NGML/Gasnexus LNG, BUA LNG, Highland LNG, and LNG Arete. These projects are part of efforts to boost domestic gas utilization in alignment with the Federal Government’s Gas Revolution Agenda.
The plants, when completed, will collectively produce 97 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.
Speaking at the event, Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, reiterated the company’s dedication to supporting the Federal Government’s gas-to-power initiatives.
“Natural gas is key to Nigeria’s future, serving as a catalyst for industrialization, job creation, and economic diversification,” Kyari stated. He highlighted that the projects would enhance energy access for millions of Nigerians.
“These mini-LNG plants will enable efficient gas transportation across long distances, offering cleaner and more affordable energy to households, industries, and businesses, especially in regions without gas pipeline infrastructure,” Kyari added.
Also present was the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Mr. Ekperikpe Ekpo, who hailed the initiative as a historic milestone for Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
“Natural gas remains a vital tool for driving Nigeria’s industrialization, economic growth, and prosperity,” Ekpo said. He assured NNPCL and its partners of the Federal Government’s continued support for the projects.
Ekpo emphasized that the initiative aligns with national goals to harness Nigeria’s vast gas resources for economic development, reduce the country’s carbon footprint, and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
