The legal team representing Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has submitted a comprehensive list of court rulings to the office of Attorney General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi at the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja, demanding Kanu’s release.
Nnaemeka Ejiofor, head of Kanu’s legal team, stated on Thursday that both domestic and international court rulings mandate the release of the IPOB leader, who is currently detained. Ejiofor explained that the submission was prompted by the AGF’s earlier claim of being unaware of Kanu’s situation, asserting that the courts would ultimately determine his fate.
The legal team also called on President Bola Tinubu to honor the various court judgements and facilitate Kanu’s release.
On May 24, Lateef Fagbemi remarked that the charges against the detained IPOB leader are complex and can only be adjudicated by a competent court of law.
Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, following his arrest in Kenya. He faces ongoing terrorism-related charges brought by the Federal Government.
