NLC warns Nigerian government not to interfere with the tenure of union leaders.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government, urging it not to interfere in the tenure of union leaders in the country.

Mr. Benson Upah, the Head of Information at NLC, expressed concerns about the government’s alleged attempt to impose a two-year tenure on labour leaders, describing it as an infringement on the autonomy of trade unions and a violation of Labour Law and International Labour Organization (ILO) Conventions.

Upah emphasized that any attempt to dictate the tenure of union leaders would be considered meddling in the internal affairs of labour organizations and could disrupt the established norms within the labour movement.

He called on the government to desist from such actions and uphold the principles of democracy and workers’ rights.

Furthermore, Upah urged the government to refrain from interfering in the operations of the Labour Party and halt the alleged campaign of destabilization against opposition parties.

He also demanded an apology from the police for their recent invasion of the NLC headquarters, warning that failure to do so could prompt industrial action or other forms of protest from the Congress.
