NLC Urges Tinubu to Engage Protest Organizers in Dialogue

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to invite the leaders of the planned protest movement for discussions to address their grievances.

In a statement, NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero emphasized the widespread anger among Nigerians over the current state of the economy. “Many Nigerian families are now forced to subsist on one inadequate meal a day, and scavenging from dustbins has become a tragic reality,” he said.

A recent assessment by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed that approximately 133 million Nigerians are living below the extreme poverty line, Ajaero noted.

The NLC President affirmed that citizens have the right to protest political issues. The organized labor movement has initiated protests against the severe economic hardships caused by government policies, including the sharp increase in the price of refined petroleum products, higher electricity costs, additional charges for public utilities, and the overall spike in the cost of living.
