The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has criticized Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, for threatening to dismiss workers who joined an ongoing strike over the non-implementation of the new minimum wage.
In a statement issued on Monday, NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, described the governor’s stance as counterproductive. He directed workers and affiliate unions in Ebonyi to maintain the industrial action until their demands for the 2024 national minimum wage are met.
“We are dismayed by Governor Nwifuru’s statement that striking workers must resume immediately or face termination. Such threats are not a solution,” Ajaero stated.
Breakdown in Dialogue
The NLC President explained that the strike followed repeated but unsuccessful attempts to engage the state government. Despite several notices urging the governor to implement the new minimum wage, signed into law months ago, no resolution was reached.
“Rather than resorting to threats, the governor should have invited labour leaders for dialogue to resolve the issue swiftly,” Ajaero added.
Call for Compliance with Labour Law
The NLC insists that the Ebonyi State government must comply with the law by paying the new minimum wage. Ajaero assured workers that the congress would provide further directives as necessary, emphasizing the importance of resolving the matter through constructive engagement rather than intimidation.
The industrial action in Ebonyi underscores a broader national call for state governments to uphold their obligations under the new wage law, ensuring fair and lawful treatment of workers across the country.
