NLC Slams FG, Demands 150,000MW Power Surge”

Nigeria: The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has disputed claims made by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who recently stated that 150 million Nigerians now have access to adequate electricity with a generation of 5,500MW

NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, criticized the minister’s statement, asserting that it misrepresents the reality of the country’s power supply. According to Ajaero, Nigerians continue to endure power outages and face exorbitant electricity tariffs, with the nation struggling to generate a mere 5,000MW—well below the global standard of 1,000MW per million people. Ajaero emphasized that Nigeria should be producing at least 150,000MW to meet the needs of its population. He also pointed out that the country’s electricity generation has never exceeded 5,500MW, and the supply remains erratic and unreliable. Despite the minister’s assertion, Ajaero stressed that millions of Nigerians, from urban slums to rural areas, are still without access to electricity. The NLC remains committed to advocating for reforms to restore fairness and equity in the nation’s power sector.
