NLC Plans Peaceful Prayer Procession in Response to Police Summons

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has instructed its members across the country to participate in a peaceful prayer procession on August 29. This directive comes in response to the police’s recent invitation to NLC President Joe Ajaero for questioning on charges including alleged “criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.”

In a letter addressed to all affiliates and state councils, NLC General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja outlined the plan for the peaceful demonstration, titled “Mobilisation for Peaceful Procession and Prayer Session in Solidarity.” The letter, issued on Wednesday in Abuja, called on members to stand united against what the NLC described as an attempt to intimidate its leadership and suppress the voices of Nigerian workers.

Ugboaja emphasized that members in state capitals should gather at their respective state secretariats of Congress before marching peacefully to their State Police Headquarters, where they will hold a prayer session until Ajaero’s interaction with the police is concluded.

“This peaceful march is a united stand against the unjust actions aimed at intimidating our leadership and stifling the voice of Nigerian workers,” Ugboaja stated. He urged all participants to maintain peace and order throughout the procession and prayer session.

He also warned that if Ajaero is detained, all workers nationwide will commence an indefinite strike. Ugboaja called for unwavering support and solidarity, stressing the importance of defending civic rights and the integrity of the labor movement during this critical time.

“Together, we shall overcome these challenges and continue to uphold justice, fairness, and democracy in our dear nation,” he added.

Ugboaja further instructed all NLC affiliates and state councils to mobilize their members in Abuja and across the states for the event. Central Working Committee members residing in Abuja, along with other members, are expected to gather at the NLC National Headquarters by 8:00 am on August 29 to accompany the NLC President to the police for the scheduled interaction.
