Abia state, Nigeria-The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) has named Aba, Abia State’s commercial capital, as the industrial development hub for the South-East region of Nigeria.
This strategic designation was announced during a courtesy visit to Governor Alex Otti in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, by the Chairman of NIPSS and former Senate President, Senator Ken Nnamani, and the Director-General of the Institute, Professor Ayo Omotayo.
Senator Nnamani stated that the initiative is part of efforts to advance President Bola Tinubu’s industrialisation agenda in the region. He commended Governor Otti’s administration for its notable progress in economic and infrastructure development.
Professor Omotayo noted that Aba was selected based on empirical assessments, describing the city as a historically significant centre of trade, innovation, and industry in the South-East.
In his remarks, Governor Otti welcomed the recognition and praised NIPSS for its transparency and commitment despite external pressures to site the project elsewhere. He noted that the selection aligns with his administration’s broader economic revitalisation plan and pledged the state’s full support for the federal government’s industrial agenda.
To facilitate collaboration, the governor directed his Principal Secretary and Chief Strategy Officer to coordinate with NIPSS and provide the necessary assistance.
Governor Otti also highlighted the state’s industrial potential, revealing that the Ariaria International Market alone hosts approximately 60,000 shoemakers. He added that the state government has recently restructured the operations of the Enyimba Shoe and Garment Factories to drive local manufacturing and job creation.
