NIPOST closes down five courier and logistics companies for operating illegally in Benin.

The Nigeria Postal Services (NIPOST) has taken action in Edo State by shutting down five courier and logistics operational offices for allegedly operating illegally and without the required licenses.

Additionally, seven delivery motorcycles belonging to the operators were seized during the operation. Gideon Oludotun Shonde, the NIPOST General Manager overseeing the courier and logistics department, confirmed this development to the press in Benin City.

The closure of these offices was part of an effort to eliminate unlicensed, unethical, and illegal courier and logistic operators within the state. The approval for this clampdown came from the Postmaster-General of the Federation/CEO, Tola Odeyemi, as a response to the prevalence of unlicensed operators flouting the regulations outlined in the NIPOST Act and Regulatory Operational Guidelines.

Shonde emphasized that the enforcement was necessary to establish a fair competitive environment for legitimate operators and to address issues such as public safety threats, illicit cargo transportation, and unethical business practices within the industry. He pointed out that the sector had been infiltrated by operators engaging in illegal activities, including the transportation of illicit drugs and arms.

He highlighted the importance of obtaining the necessary operating license from NIPOST before engaging in courier and logistics services. Shonde urged individuals interested in entering the courier business to adhere to the established procedures and guidelines set by the regulatory authority to operate legally and ethically.

Violating these regulations, as stipulated in the NIPOST Act, could result in legal action and prosecution for illegal operation.
