Abuja , Nigeria – The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather advisory forecasting widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across the country from Monday to Wednesday, warning of possible flash floods in several areas.
According to its latest weather outlook, NiMet predicts thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall on Monday morning in parts of Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina States. The agency emphasized that residents in these northern states should remain vigilant.
In the North Central region, cloudy morning skies are expected, with light to moderate rainfall likely over Niger, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, and Nasarawa States. Plateau State, in particular, has been flagged for a high risk of flash flooding.
Southern states are expected to experience cloudy conditions in the morning, followed by light to moderate rainfall later in the day across Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
For Tuesday, NiMet forecasts mostly sunny skies with scattered cloud cover across the North in the morning. However, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall may develop in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina, and Kano. Additional thunderstorms are likely later in the day in Sokoto, Kebbi, and other affected states.
In the central region, light to moderate rainfall is expected in the morning across Niger, Benue, FCT, Kogi, Plateau, and Nasarawa, with more rain predicted later in the day across Kwara and other areas. The South is also set to experience increased rainfall activity in the afternoon and evening in Abia, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa States.
By Wednesday, sunny intervals with patches of cloud are forecast for most parts of the North. However, morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected in Kaduna, Kebbi, Taraba, Sokoto, Zamfara, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina States.
NiMet urged the public to take precautionary measures, including securing loose outdoor items, disconnecting electrical appliances during storms, and avoiding sheltering under tall trees. Vulnerable populations were also advised to dress warmly, particularly in areas with lower night temperatures.
The agency further advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather updates from NiMet’s offices to support safe and effective flight operations.
