NiMet Predicts Widespread Thunderstorms and Rains Across Nigeria

Abuja, NigeriaThe Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a three-day spell of thunderstorms and rains across various parts of the country, starting Monday, June 2.

In a statement released in Abuja on Sunday, NiMet outlined its weather outlook covering the northern, central, and southern regions of Nigeria.

According to the Agency, morning thunderstorms are expected on Monday over parts of Taraba, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, Jigawa, and Kano States. By afternoon, showers and thunderstorms are also likely in Borno, Kebbi, Sokoto, Taraba, Kaduna, and Zamfara States.

In the North-Central zone, morning rainfall is anticipated in FCT, Niger, and Nasarawa, with increased activity in the afternoon across Plateau, Kwara, Kogi, and Benue.

The southern region will see a cloudy start on Monday, with morning showers expected in Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Ebonyi, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom. Later in the day, widespread rain is forecast across Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, Lagos, Enugu, Delta, and Bayelsa States.

For Tuesday, June 3, NiMet projects continued thunderstorms in Kano, Zamfara, Katsina, Gombe, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, and Taraba, both in the morning and evening. North-Central States including FCT, Nasarawa, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, and Plateau are also expected to witness thunderstorms with rain throughout the day.

The southern region will experience rainfall in the morning over Ondo, Ebonyi, Abia, and Rivers, extending to the entire region by evening.

On Wednesday, June 4, the Agency forecasts early morning rains and thunderstorms over Zamfara, Adamawa, Kaduna, Sokoto, and Kebbi. Later in the day, Taraba, Katsina, and Bauchi will also experience similar weather.

In the North-Central, early morning showers are expected in Niger, Benue, Nasarawa, and the FCT, with storms continuing in the afternoon across Kwara, Plateau, and Kogi. The southern region is forecast to receive morning and evening rains in almost all states including Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Ogun, Edo, and Rivers.

NiMet warned that strong winds may accompany the storms, urging the public to exercise caution. “Secure loose objects, avoid driving in heavy rain, and disconnect electrical appliances when not in use,” the advisory read.

Airline operators were also urged to obtain localized flight weather reports for better operational planning, while residents are encouraged to stay informed via official NiMet updates.
