NiMet Forecasts Thunderstorms, Warns of Flash Flood Risk

Abuja, NigeriaThe Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has projected widespread thundery and rainy conditions across the country from Monday through Wednesday, cautioning against potential flash flooding in several areas.

In a weather outlook issued on Sunday, NiMet forecast morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall across parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina on Monday. Thunderstorms are also anticipated later in the day throughout the northern region.

The agency highlighted a high likelihood of flooding in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, and Bauchi States during the forecast period.

For the North Central zone, light morning showers are expected in Benue, the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa, with light rains continuing in the afternoon across Kwara, Plateau, and surrounding states.

Southern Nigeria is expected to experience cloudy skies and light rains in states such as Ebonyi, Enugu, Ogun, Rivers, and Lagos, both in the morning and later in the day. NiMet identified Oyo, Edo, Delta, and Ogun as high-risk areas for flooding during the period.

On Tuesday, thunderstorm activity is forecast to persist across the northern region, particularly in Taraba, Katsina, Kebbi, and Kaduna States, while intermittent light rains are expected in central and southern regions, including Nasarawa, Kwara, Ebonyi, and Cross River.

By Wednesday, NiMet expects isolated thunderstorms and moderate rains in parts of Borno, Gombe, Yobe, and Kano. Light rains are also predicted over parts of the FCT, Niger, and Delta later in the day.

The agency advised the public to take safety precautions, avoid driving during heavy rain, secure loose objects, and stay updated through official weather channels.

Airline operators were urged to obtain airport-specific forecasts from NiMet to ensure safe and efficient flight operations.
