Nigeria’s Space Economy Set to Propel $200 Billion — NASRDA

Abuja, NigeriaThe Federal Government has spotlighted Nigeria’s burgeoning space industry as a vital pillar of economic transformation, with projections estimating an annual revenue generation of $200 billion.

This vision was unveiled by the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Mr. Uche Nnaji, during a stakeholders’ workshop focused on enforcing the 2015 Space Regulations for Licensing and Supervision of Space Activities.

According to Mr. Nnaji, the nation’s space economy is expected to grow at a rate of 18 to 20 percent yearly, propelled by enhanced licensing systems and a reinforced regulatory framework. He described the initiative as a pivotal stride toward building a competitive and innovation-driven industry.

He further affirmed that the new policy direction, driven by a Presidential directive empowering the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), will help shield Nigeria’s interests from foreign exploitation while laying the groundwork for a secure and thriving space environment.

Dr. Matthew Adepoju, Director General of NASRDA, reiterated the significance of the regulatory reforms, describing them as a catalyst for job creation, innovation, national security enhancement, and improved revenue streams.

“Compliance with the licensing regime is not just a national priority; it is fundamental to our alignment with international space law,” Dr. Adepoju emphasized.

Guest speaker Dr. Olisa Agbakoba (SAN) called for a revision of the NASRDA Act and associated national policies, citing the need to reflect current advancements and trends in global space exploration.

The event also featured the unveiling of a newly designed NASRDA logo,  symbolizing Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones,  and the launch of a national digital platform aimed at monitoring space activities. In addition, the Nigerian Science, Technology & Innovation Television received a boost with the official handover of advanced studio equipment.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to harnessing space technology as a driver of national prosperity and global relevance.
