Nigeria’s science education deficit examined

By Damilola Adeleke

The author reflects on the presence of the word “science” in various departments and faculties at Nigerian universities. Initially, the author was puzzled by this presence but later realized that science is fundamental to learning, regardless of the discipline. The author emphasizes that science should be about improving human lives and addressing societal needs. To achieve this, curricula must be tailored to meet societal needs, and academic research should focus on resolving local issues and contributing to society. The author also highlights the importance of promoting and preserving local languages, as demonstrated by the inclusion of Yoruba language in a U.S. state’s driver’s permit test. Ultimately, the author calls for a renewed focus on science in Nigerian education by incorporating concrete societal engagement into academic activities.
