Nigeria’s Aviation Sector Takes a Green Leap

Nigeria:   Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to global climate change initiatives, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices in the aviation sector

This commitment is evident in the Ministry’s collaboration with the House Committee on Climate Change to adopt green technologies and practices.

Key Initiatives
– Adoption of Green Technologies: The Ministry aims to lead by example in adopting environmentally friendly practices, focusing on innovation and fuel efficiency to reduce carbon emissions.
– Collaboration with National Assembly: Keyamo highlighted the importance of collaboration with the National Assembly to enhance policy frameworks for environmental sustainability.
– Implementation of Climate Change Initiatives: Agencies under the Ministry, such as NiMET, FAAN, and NCAA, are already implementing initiatives to mitigate the impact of climate change.

Institutionalizing Climate Efforts
To track progress on climate-related initiatives, a Communications Committee has been formed, comprising representatives from:
– House Committees on Aviation and Climate Change
– Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development
– FAAN
– NCAA
– NiMET
– NAMA
– Special Assistant to the Minister on Climate Change

This committee will submit quarterly progress reports, ensuring transparency and accountability in the implementation of climate change initiatives.

Nigeria’s commitment to global climate efforts is evident in its alignment with:
– Paris Agreement
– Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA)
– International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)
