Nigerian teacher shortlist 50-person in Global Teacher Prize

Ogun state, Nigeria – A mathematics teacher at Imagbon/Imaka Comprehensive High School, Ogun State, Mr. Kayode Adewale, has been named among the 50 finalists for the prestigious 2025 Global Teacher Prize.

The announcement was made in a statement released on the Global Teacher Prize website on Wednesday.

This global initiative, supported by UNESCO and organised by the Varkey Foundation, honours educators who have made extraordinary contributions to education, transforming lives and communities.

Adewale, a STEM educator in a semi-urban area, teaches students from low-income farming families who lack resources, using technology and culturally relevant methods to engage them.

To tackle these challenges, the organizers highlighted how Adewale incorporates local languages like Yoruba and Hausa into his lessons, simplifying complex mathematical concepts. His teaching methods blend Culturally Relevant Pedagogy with Digital Literacy, guiding students to transform their smartphones into valuable academic tools.

The statement read: “Through culturally tailored instructional videos and practical examples, he bridged the gap between his students’ linguistic and cultural realities and the academic content, fostering understanding and engagement.

“By introducing platforms like the Technology-Assisted Management Solution (TAIMS) and educational apps like Inquiry Learning Space (ILS) and PhET simulation, he created opportunities for collaborative virtual study groups and hands-on problem-solving, enhancing students’ performance in national and regional exams while cultivating digital skills critical for 21st-century success.”

Adewale’s influence stretches through his Transformation1090 Initiative, which has trained over 30,000 teachers, providing them with resources to incorporate technology into their teaching methods.

Beyond academics, Kayode also fosters community development through leadership roles, quiz competitions, and his radio platform, where he promotes entrepreneurial skills and awareness on global issues.

The organizers also referred to Adewale as a teacher whose journey exemplifies perseverance and creativity.

“Kayode Adewale’s story is one of resilience, innovation, and an unyielding belief in the transformative power of education. By addressing socio-economic challenges with creativity and cultural sensitivity, he has improved academic outcomes and empowered students and teachers to unlock their full potential. His vision of a world where every child has access to quality education is not merely aspirational—it is a reality he works tirelessly to achieve,” the statement added.
