Nigerian Legion Demotes Senior Officers Amid Security Reforms

The National Council of the Nigerian Legion has announced the immediate de-ranking of officers within the Corps of Commissionaire, from Commandant-General (CG) to Assistant Sector Commander (ASC), as part of an initiative to reorganize the nation’s security framework and uphold the integrity of the Nigerian Legion.

In a four-point communique released at the conclusion of the 2024 National Council meeting in Abuja, retired Major Victor Abiola, Secretary-General of the Nigerian Legion, conveyed the decision on behalf of retired Major-General Abdulmalik Jibril, the National Chairman.

Abiola emphasized that this action is necessary to address national security concerns and to eliminate non-compliance with regulations, impersonation, illegal firearm possession, and other malpractices.

The communique states that the directive is effective from June 6, 2024, and has been communicated to the Minister of Defence, all Service Chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, and other security agencies to ensure adherence in line with national laws.

Additionally, the Council is progressing towards establishing the Nigerian Legion Microfinance Bank and other innovative programs aimed at achieving financial independence for the Legion.

The Council also called for the inclusion of the Nigerian Legion in the annual budget allocation to better support the social well-being of veterans and their families and to fulfill the Legion’s objectives.
