Nigeria _ Nigeria’s Joint Committee of the Senate and House on Solid Minerals has rejected the proposed ₦9 billion budget for the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, deeming it inadequate to support the country’s economic diversification efforts.
The committee’s chairman, Senator Ekong Sampson, emphasized the need for a substantial budgetary increase to unlock the sector’s potential, warning that underfunding would hinder the ministry’s ambitious roadmap.
The proposed budget has been widely criticized for failing to address the sector’s critical needs, particularly in exploration, data gathering, and infrastructure development. Lawmakers argue that a significant investment in the solid minerals sector is essential to drive economic diversification, create jobs, and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on oil.The committee has resolved to engage stakeholders and push for adequate funding to transform the sector and capitalize on Nigeria’s vast mineral wealth.
