Nigerian government states Tinubu is not opposed to protests – August 1

The Nigerian government, under President Tinubu, has stated that it acknowledges and respects the rights of Nigerians to engage in protests but is committed to ensuring that such activities do not disrupt public order or violate the rights of others.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made these remarks during a visit from members of the Charismatic Bishop Conference in Abuja.Idris emphasized that while the government supports peaceful protests, it is against any form of violence that could harm the well-being of Nigerians.

President Tinubu is said to be actively addressing the concerns and complaints expressed by Nigerians and is working on implementing policies to alleviate challenges faced by the citizenry.One of the initiatives mentioned is the plan to provide stipends for unemployed university and polytechnic graduates until they secure formal employment.

Additionally, a policy is being developed to support graduates who have completed their education but are unable to find jobs.

The Minister highlighted President Tinubu’s commitment to improving the welfare of workers, including the negotiation of a national minimum wage of N70,000 following engagements with Organised Labour Unions.He also mentioned the introduction of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) policy, aimed at reducing transportation costs by about 60% and providing an alternative to petrol and diesel.

Regarding security, the Minister noted significant improvements in various flashpoints across the country, particularly on the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway.

Archbishop Leonard Kawas of the Charismatic Bishop’s Conference announced that the conference would not be participating in the planned national protest and instead expressed a desire to work towards peace and continue negotiations with the government on areas of concern.

The Archbishop recognized the progress made by the Tinubu administration in areas such as social investment, the Student Loan Scheme, security, infrastructure, and the introduction of the N70,000 National Minimum Wage.

The Bishops resolved to partner with the Federal Government through prayers and advocacy for the success of the administration.
