Nigerian government pledges to take stringent action against illegal mining

The Federal Government has issued a stern call to miners nationwide, emphasizing the imperative adherence to proper licensing procedures before initiating operations. Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, conveyed this directive during a convened session with licensed mineral holders, laterite, and sand operators in Kaduna State on Thursday.

In his address, the Minister underscored the necessity for operators to acquire a permit post-securing their mining license. He emphasized that this permit serves as a crucial document facilitating smooth mining activities by introducing operators to state and local governments, as well as communities through their traditional ruler.

Represented by Mr. Kutman Ali, the acting Zonal Mines Officer, the Minister urged operators in Kaduna State to promptly settle outstanding debts. Alake shed light on the financial landscape, revealing that miners and operators nationwide collectively owed the Federal Government an outstanding sum exceeding N2 trillion. Notably, Kaduna State alone carried a debt surpassing N300 billion.

The primary agenda of the meeting was to delineate the Minister’s strategic vision for the mining sector in 2024 and beyond. Alake emphasized the resurrection of the Special Mines Surveillance Taskforce (SMSTF) as a pivotal measure to combat illegal mining and ensure the timely fulfillment of royalties and taxes.
