Nigerian drug lord escapes from South Africa, apprehended in a luxurious residence in Imo.

A Nigerian drug baron, Joachin Mbonu, who was on the wanted list of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has been apprehended by NDLEA operatives in his village mansion in Imo State.

Mbonu was arrested alongside his associate on July 5. The NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Tuesday, revealing that Mbonu is believed to be part of a drug cartel involved in the production and distribution of methamphetamine.

The drug cartel, which had operational bases in Imo and Rivers states, was under scrutiny by the agency for its involvement in distributing significant quantities of methamphetamine in the South-East, South-South, and other regions of the country.

During the operation that led to Mbonu’s arrest, law enforcement agents confiscated 419.99 grams of methamphetamine, 750 grams of iodine, a pump action gun with four cartridges, and other incriminating evidence.

Further investigations and raids on properties linked to Mbonu’s associates in Rivers and Imo states resulted in the discovery of additional illicit drugs and weapons.

Babafemi highlighted the recovery of various prohibited substances and firearms during these follow-up actions.

The statement also revealed that Mbonu had fled South Africa, where he had resided for an extended period, as he was under investigation for drug-related activities.

Upon returning to Nigeria, he continued his illegal activities by establishing hidden drug laboratories in remote areas to evade detection.
