Nigeria _ The Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS) has called on the media to intensify efforts in promoting awareness and advocacy for Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, emphasizing its crucial role in preventing cervical cancer
Prof. Abidemi Omonisi, President of the NCS, made the appeal during a media parley in Abuja, stressing the need for early vaccination and education to combat the disease.
Cervical cancer, largely preventable and treatable when detected early, claims thousands of lives annually in Nigeria, with 12,000 new cases and 8,000 deaths recorded in 2020. The HPV vaccine, introduced into Nigeria’s routine immunization schedule in October 2023, aims to vaccinate 7.7 million girls aged 9-14 years, with the support of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and UNICEF. By prioritizing early vaccination and spreading awareness, stakeholders aim to significantly reduce cervical cancer cases, ensuring a healthier future for Nigerian women and girls.
