Nigerian Athlete Wins Gold in Powerlifting at Paralympics

Nigerian para-powerlifter Folashade Oluwafemiayo has won gold in the women’s over 86kg category at the 2024 Paralympics. Oluwafemiayo made history by lifting an unprecedented 167kg, securing the top spot ahead of China’s Xuamei Deng, who lifted 155kg, and Egypt’s Nadia Ali, who lifted 145kg.

With her record-breaking performance, Oluwafemiayo becomes the first para-athlete to lift 167kg, bringing Nigeria’s medal count at the Paralympics to seven.

In response to this remarkable achievement, Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, extended her congratulations to Oluwafemiayo. In a message celebrating the win, the First Lady said, “The entire womenfolk is proud of Folashade’s achievement.”

She continued, “I offer my heartfelt congratulations to Folashade Oluwafemiayo on winning Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 2024 Paralympics and setting multiple world records. Your remarkable feat is an inspiration, showcasing what dedication, resilience, and perseverance can achieve. You have not only made history but also opened the door for others to dream big.
