Nigeria, Venezuela Strengthen Ties with Direct Flights to Mark 60 Years of Diplomatic Relations

Abuja, NigeriaIn a historic move to deepen bilateral relations, Nigeria and Venezuela have announced plans to inaugurate direct flights between Abuja and Caracas in celebration of 60 years of diplomatic engagement.

The development was confirmed during a courtesy visit by the Venezuelan Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Alberto Castellar Padilla, to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, in Abuja.

Ambassador Padilla hailed the longstanding friendship between the two oil-producing nations, both members of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), noting that the initiative would foster enhanced collaboration in business, tourism, and culture.

He emphasized that the launch of direct air connectivity signifies a renewed commitment to strengthening economic and people-to-people ties.

“We have completed all necessary groundwork on our side. With Nigeria’s approval, we are ready to commence direct flights through our national carrier, CONVIASA,” Ambassador Padilla stated.

Reflecting on previous agreements, he recalled that both nations had signed a bilateral air services accord in 2022, and this latest move signals the beginning of its implementation.

In response, Minister Keyamo, through a statement by his Personal Assistant on Media/Research, Mr. Emameh Gabriel, welcomed the development, citing its potential to eliminate travel difficulties and advance continental connectivity.

“We recognize Venezuela’s readiness, which is a key component in the bilateral air services framework. The direct route will streamline travel between Africa and South America, offering significant benefits for trade and diplomacy,” the Minister remarked.

He further announced the formation of a joint technical committee, comprising officials from the Ministry and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), to fast-track necessary approvals.

Both parties expressed optimism that the direct flight service will open new channels for cooperation beyond energy, solidifying a shared vision of mutual prosperity and integration.

The statement concluded with a reaffirmation of Nigeria and Venezuela’s commitment to sustained diplomatic engagement and infrastructural advancement.
