The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has unveiled plans to host a landmark continental conference in 2025, bringing together data protection representatives from across Africa to deliberate on crucial issues in the field.
Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the NDPC National Commissioner, made this announcement during a media briefing celebrating the first anniversary of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act 2023) in Abuja. He outlined the conference’s ambitious objectives, including enhancing economic value, promoting culture and tourism, attracting foreign direct investment, and creating a safer digital environment, all while strengthening data protection practices both in Nigeria and across the continent.
Dr. Olatunji emphasized the necessity of continued awareness, capacity building, and collaboration among stakeholders to achieve these goals. He pointed out the challenges and opportunities in data protection, highlighting its potential for job creation and capacity building.
As part of President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda, the NDPC has launched a portal to train 10,000 public servants in responsible data management. This initiative aims to leverage the benefits of data protection to drive economic growth and development.
Solomon Odoli, Project Coordinator of the Eco-system Coordination Strategic Unit for the Nigerian Digital Identification for Development Project (ID4D), commended this milestone as a significant achievement in the nation’s commitment to privacy and personal data protection. He noted that the forthcoming event underscores Nigeria’s dedication to upholding privacy rights and fostering a safer digital environment for all.
