Nigeria commits to conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity beyond its jurisdiction. Represented by its Foreign Affairs Ministry, Nigeria signed the treaty at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The agreement, adopted in June 2023, addresses marine genetic resources, area-based management, environmental impact assessments, and capacity-building. Nigeria actively participated in negotiations.
The treaty, open for signature until September 2025, aims to become the third implementing agreement to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Nigeria, the 90th signatory, aims to ratify it promptly.
As of now, 90 countries have signed, with Belize, Palau, Seychelles, and Chile already ratifying the agreement.
