The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has confirmed that the police have taken into custody a lawyer named Ekere Ebong, who was seen in a viral video assaulting his wife. This information was given by the minister at a press briefing in Abuja following the weekend incident in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom state.
Mrs Kennedy-Ohanenye stated that she had taken action after receiving numerous complaints about the incident and enlisted the help of the police to investigate the matter. She also mentioned that she had spoken with the victim, and that the ministry would continue to monitor the situation and offer support to the woman and her children.
The minister also emphasized the need for zero tolerance for domestic violence and highlighted the various efforts being made by the federal government to protect women and children in Nigeria. She also called on members of the public to report any cases of abuse they may be aware of so that the appropriate authorities can intervene.
In a disturbing video circulating on WhatsApp, Ekere Ebong was seen beating his wife, who is covered in blood. Other people are seen in the video attempting to stop him from hurting her, and a neighbor is heard accusing Mr. Ebong of beating his wife for four years. The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has responded to the video, stating that the Ministry will not tolerate any form of assault on women or girls.
In response to the video, the Minister expressed concern about the violence and stated that legal action would be taken against Mr. Ebong in the near future.
