Nigeria Joins Global Health Initiative to Combat Malnutrition, Says Shettima

The federal government has announced its participation in the Grand Challenges Nigeria (GCNg) Project, a global health initiative aimed at tackling malnutrition and food insecurity in the country.

Vice President Kashim Shettima revealed this partnership, which targets Nigeria’s nutritional challenges, in collaboration with the Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN) during a high-level meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

In a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications, Vice President Shettima emphasized the importance of constructive action amidst the planned nationwide protests, acknowledging the hardships caused by recent economic reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidies.

“We understand the difficulties Nigerians are facing, and our sympathies are with them. The oil subsidy has been a burden for 50 years. We believe that as harvests increase, it will positively impact the common man,” Shettima stated.

Addressing the nutritional crisis, the Vice President reiterated the government’s commitment to the Nutrition 774 Initiative, noting that “catalytic initiatives like the Nutrition 774 Initiative are meticulously designed to incentivize positive changes across our communities.”

The GCNg Project, in collaboration with the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, aims to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in addressing public health and food system challenges.

Professor Hafiz Abubakar, leader of the NSN delegation, highlighted that the initiative is largely funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He called on the Vice President, as Chairman of the Nutrition Council of Nigeria, to spearhead the government’s involvement and galvanize ministerial support for the project.

Earlier, Godwin Bamsa, Senior Programmes Manager for Grand Challenges Nigeria, provided context on the initiative’s global impact, noting that since 2003, the Gates Foundation has invested over $1.6 billion in health and innovation projects across 118 countries.
